Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) is a psychological
condition that occurs in response to a traumatic event. Symptoms typically
develop within a month of the traumatic experience and can persist for up to a
month afterwards. Individuals with ASD may experience a range of symptoms,
including intrusive memories or flashbacks of the traumatic event, avoidance of
reminders of the trauma, negative changes in mood and cognition, as well as
heightened arousal and reactivity. These symptoms can significantly impair
daily functioning and may cause distress and impairment in social,
occupational, or other important areas of life. While ASD shares similarities
with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the key difference is the timeframe
of symptom onset. Early intervention through therapy, such as
cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and
reprocessing (EMDR), along with support from medications if necessary, can help
individuals manage symptoms and prevent the development of chronic PTSD.
