Cluster C Personality Disorders
are a group of personality disorders characterized by anxious and fearful
behaviours. This cluster includes Avoidant Personality Disorder, Dependent
Personality Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD).
Avoidant Personality Disorder is
marked by extreme social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and
hypersensitivity to negative evaluation. Individuals with this disorder often
avoid social interactions due to fear of rejection or criticism, leading to significant
impairments in personal and professional relationships.
Dependent Personality Disorder
involves a pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of, leading to
submissive and clinging behaviour and fears of separation. Individuals with
this disorder often have difficulty making decisions without excessive advice
and reassurance from others, and they may go to great lengths to obtain
support, even tolerating mistreatment.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality
Disorder (OCPD) is characterized by a preoccupation with orderliness,
perfectionism, and control. Unlike Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), OCPD
does not typically involve intrusive thoughts and ritualistic behaviours. Instead,
individuals with OCPD may be excessively focused on details, rules, and
schedules, often at the expense of flexibility and efficiency.
Treatment for Cluster C
personality disorders typically involves psychotherapy, such as
cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which can help individuals develop
healthier thinking patterns and coping mechanisms. Medications may be used to
address co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression. With appropriate
treatment, individuals can achieve significant improvements in their quality of
life.
