Body
Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition characterized by
obsessive preoccupation with perceived flaws or defects in one's physical
appearance, which are often minor or nonexistent. Individuals with BDD may
spend excessive time scrutinizing their appearance, engaging in repetitive
behaviors such as mirror checking or seeking reassurance, and may avoid social
situations or activities due to concerns about their appearance. Despite
reassurance from others, individuals with BDD remain convinced of their flaws,
leading to significant distress and impairment in daily functioning. BDD often
co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders.
Treatment typically involves a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy
(CBT), particularly focusing on cognitive restructuring and exposure therapy,
and medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The
goal of treatment is to reduce preoccupation with perceived flaws, alleviate
distress, and improve overall functioning and quality of life.
