Cluster A personality disorders are characterized by odd or eccentric
behavior and include three distinct disorders: paranoid, schizoid, and
schizotypal personality disorders.
Paranoid personality disorder involves pervasive distrust and suspicion of
others, interpreting benign actions as malevolent. Individuals with this
disorder often believe they are being exploited or harmed by others without
sufficient evidence.
Schizoid personality disorder is marked by detachment from social
relationships and a limited range of emotional expression. People with this
disorder typically prefer solitary activities and lack interest in forming
close interpersonal connections.
Schizotypal personality disorder involves eccentric behavior, odd beliefs
or magical thinking, and difficulty with social relationships. Individuals may
have peculiar speech patterns, unusual perceptual experiences, and exhibit
paranoia or mild psychotic symptoms.
While individuals with Cluster A personality disorders may not necessarily
seek treatment due to their eccentricities, therapy approaches such as
cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can
help improve social functioning and address maladaptive behaviors.
