‘ECT Session’ Meet the Best Psychiatrists - Dr. Anuja Kelkar (MBBS, MD)

An Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) session is a medical procedure primarily used to treat severe psychiatric conditions, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, and sometimes schizophrenia. During an ECT session, the patient is first given a general anaesthetic to induce unconsciousness and a muscle relaxant to prevent convulsions.

Electrodes are then carefully placed on the patient's scalp to deliver controlled electrical currents to the brain. These currents intentionally induce a brief seizure, typically lasting less than a minute. The entire procedure, including preparation and recovery from anaesthesia, usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

ECT is typically administered in a series of sessions, often spaced a few days apart, depending on the patient's response and the severity of their condition. Potential side effects may include short-term memory loss, confusion immediately following treatment, and headaches or muscle aches. ECT sessions are conducted under strict medical supervision to maximize safety and effectiveness while minimizing discomfort for the patient.
