‘Factitious Disorders’ Meet the Best Psychiatrists - Dr. Anuja Kelkar ( MBBS, MD)

Factitious disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by the deliberate fabrication or exaggeration of physical or psychological symptoms with the intention of assuming the sick role and receiving medical attention or sympathy. Unlike malingering, where symptoms are fabricated for external gain such as financial compensation or avoidance of responsibilities, individuals with factitious disorders are motivated by a desire to be seen as ill or injured.

There are two main types of factitious disorders: factitious disorder imposed on self and factitious disorder imposed on another (previously known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy). In factitious disorder imposed on self, individuals intentionally produce or feign symptoms in themselves, while in factitious disorder imposed on another, individuals fabricate or induce symptoms in another person, often a dependent or vulnerable individual, such as a child or elderly relative.

People with factitious disorders often go to great lengths to maintain the appearance of illness, including seeking unnecessary medical procedures or treatments, falsifying medical records, or changing healthcare providers frequently to avoid detection. The exact causes of factitious disorders are not fully understood but may involve a combination of psychological, social, and biological factors.

Treatment for factitious disorders typically involves psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to address underlying psychological issues and develop healthier coping strategies. In severe cases, involuntary hospitalization may be necessary to ensure the safety of the individual and prevent further harm. Early intervention and a multidisciplinary approach involving mental health professionals, medical providers, and social services are essential for effectively managing factitious disorders and addressing the complex underlying issues.
