Trichotillomania, also known
as hair-pulling disorder, is a mental health condition characterized by
recurrent and irresistible urges to pull out one's hair, leading to noticeable
hair loss and significant distress or impairment in daily functioning. Individuals
with trichotillomania experience a sense of tension or anxiety before pulling
out their hair and relief or gratification afterward, but often feel ashamed or
embarrassed by their behaviour.
Trichotillomania can lead
to physical complications such as skin damage, infections, and repetitive
strain injuries, as well as psychological distress and impaired social or
occupational functioning. It may also co-occur with other mental health
conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, or obsessive-compulsive
disorder (OCD).
Treatment for trichotillomania typically
involves a combination of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT),
habit reversal training, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), along
with medication, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
or naltrexone.
Early intervention and
comprehensive treatment are essential in addressing trichotillomania and
improving the individual's quality of life. Supportive interventions aimed at
managing triggers, developing coping strategies, and promoting self-esteem are
also crucial components of treatment.
