Excoriation Disorder, also
known as skin picking disorder or dermatillomania, is a mental health condition
characterized by repetitive and compulsive picking, scratching, or rubbing of
the skin, leading to tissue damage, scarring, and significant distress or
impairment in daily functioning. Individuals with excoriation disorder
experience intense urges to pick at their skin, often in response to perceived
imperfections, blemishes, or irregularities.
Excoriation disorder can
lead to physical complications such as skin infections, wounds, and scarring,
as well as psychological distress and impaired social or occupational
functioning. It may also co-occur with other mental health conditions such as
anxiety disorders, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
The exact cause of excoriation
disorder is not fully understood but likely involves a combination of
genetic, neurological, psychological, and environmental factors. Treatment for
excoriation disorder typically involves a combination of therapy, such as
cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), habit reversal training, and acceptance
and commitment therapy (ACT), along with medication, particularly selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or naltrexone.
