Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is a mental health condition primarily diagnosed in children and adolescents characterized by severe and recurrent temper outbursts that are disproportionate to the situation or provocation. These outbursts can manifest as verbal or physical aggression, tantrums, or angry, irritable moods. Individuals with DMDD often struggle with regulating their emotions, leading to significant impairment in various areas of functioning, including social relationships and academic performance.
DMDD was introduced as a
diagnostic category in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders, Fifth Edition) to address concerns about overdiagnosis and
misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder in children who did not meet the criteria for
classic manic episodes but exhibited severe mood dysregulation. Unlike bipolar
disorder, DMDD does not involve periods of elevated or expansive mood.
