The treatment of Antisocial Personality
Disorder (ASPD) is challenging due to the nature of the disorder and
the resistance many individuals with ASPD have towards seeking help. Treatment
typically involves a combination of psychotherapy and, in some cases,
medication.
Psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioural
therapy (CBT), is often used to address problematic behaviour’s, thoughts, and
emotions associated with ASPD. CBT can help individuals with ASPD recognize and
change negative thought patterns and develop more adaptive coping strategies
for managing impulsivity and anger.
another effective approach is dialectical
behaviour therapy (DBT), which focuses on improving emotion regulation,
interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance skills. DBT can help
individuals with ASPD develop healthier ways of interacting with others and
managing their emotions.
However, it's important to note that
individuals with ASPD may have difficulty engaging in therapy due to their lack
of insight into their behaviour’s and their tendency to manipulate or deceive
others. In some cases, mandated therapy through the criminal justice system may
be necessary.
Medication is not typically used as a
primary treatment for ASPD but may be prescribed to target specific symptoms
such as impulsivity, aggression, or mood instability, particularly if
co-occurring mental health conditions are present.
