Substance/Medication-Induced Obsessive-Compulsive and Related
Disorder is a mental
health condition where the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive and related
behaviours are directly caused by substance use or withdrawal from substances.
This disorder is categorized under Substance/Medication-Induced Mental
Disorders in the DSM-5.
The symptoms of Substance/Medication-Induced
Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorder mirror those of primary obsessive-compulsive and
related disorders, including intrusive and distressing obsessions and the
engagement in compulsive behaviours aimed at alleviating anxiety or preventing
a feared outcome. However, these symptoms arise during the period of substance
intoxication, use, or withdrawal.
Substances that can induce or exacerbate obsessive-compulsive symptoms
include alcohol, stimulants like cocaine or amphetamines, medications such as
corticosteroids, and certain medical conditions or procedures involving
anaesthesia or sedation.
