Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
is a mental health condition characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with
perceived flaws or defects in one's
physical appearance, which are often minor or imagined. Individuals with BDD
intensely focus on these perceived flaws, which may involve any part of the
body but commonly centre around the skin, hair, nose, or body shape.
People with BDD may spend
significant amounts of time examining, camouflaging, or seeking reassurance
about their perceived flaws. They often engage in repetitive behaviours such as
excessive grooming, checking mirrors, or seeking cosmetic procedures in an
attempt to alleviate their distress.
The exact cause of BDD is
not fully understood but likely involves a combination of genetic,
psychological, environmental, and cultural factors. Treatment for BDD typically
involves a combination of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)
and exposure and response prevention (ERP), along with medication, particularly
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
Early intervention and
comprehensive treatment are essential in addressing BDD and preventing its
impact on mental health and well-being. Supportive interventions aimed at
improving self-esteem and body image are also beneficial in the management of
BDD.
